In the summer the house always smelled slightly of rhubarb and the talcum powder his wife used to soak up the oil that her skin produced in hot weather. All morning she alternated between drinking little cups of tea on the front porch and powdering herself in the dark bathroom, expelling sighs of complaint about the heat. The powder gave her a somewhat papery feel, like he needed to moisten his fingertips after touching her, which he often did, discreetly, with the pointed tip of his tongue. (ms)
